Description:

Annual Report on the Development of Chinese Documentary (2013) is an annual report on the development in the documentary field, released by China Documentary Research Center (CDRC). This book, based on the series of research works concerning the frontier issues done by CDRC since 2006, taking national level, academic integrity, institute position and Chinese style as guiding, integrates the views and statements of domestic and foreign experts in the documentary academia and industry into one.

During the writing process of the book, CDRC conducted a full investigation on the production and distribution organizations in the national documentary field, and carries monographic study on China Central Television(CCTV), provincial channels, specialized channels, documentary theater chain distribution, the development of China's documentary in the field of new media, the status quo of Chinese folk documentary, and other areas, through establishing CDRC research Programs, cooperating with SARFT, 3rd Bureau of the State Council Information Office, Bureau for External Cultural Relations of the Ministry of Culture, CCTV, China International Television Corporation, China Central Newsreels Corporation, CNDFILM, CSM and other related institutions. The Research team summarizes, collects and analyzes the large number of the first-hand data, compares and verifies the authoritative data of relevant departments. It not only fully grasps the current situation of Chinese documentaries, but also forecasts the development direction of documentary industry.

The book includes “General Report”, “Broad Vision” etc, which pays more attention to the evaluation of industry situation, the analysis of problems, the prediction of future development; the section of “Industry Report”, “International Industrial Research”, “Academic Views”, “Documentary and New Media”, “Case Study” and other columns emphasis on presenting the developing dynamics and case analysis of documentary industry of different industries, areas and countries. In addition, the “Big Events” concludes and summarizes the big events that happened in the documentary field in 2012, and it also stresses on screening the industry information.

The “General Report” of the book combines the related survey data of CDRC in 2012, and continues the annual commercial activities surveys; in the section of “Industry Description”, it conducts a visual description and grasp from industrial trend, industrial environment, international marketing, capital markets and several other aspects; in the section of indepth analysis“Potential Theory”, it draws the outline of the industrialization process of Chinese documentaries in 2012 through “Commencing Potential”, “Saving Potential”, “Breaking Potential” and “Viewing Potential”. It not only deeply analyzes the industry status, but also conducts a deeply forward - looking thinking on the industry trend.

The outstanding feature of Chinese documentary development in 2012 is focusing on the industrialization practice entirely: A Bite of China phenomenon induces the documentary to step into a “Public Era”; larger growth occurs in the production, manufacturing, distribution, marketing, and other areas; policy thinking points steer into the substantial industry guidance from administrative guidance; industrial environment is continuously improving; international marketing seeks for breakthroughs; and capital market tries to start up. All these phenomena indicate the development of Chinese documentary has begun a comprehensive transformation from trade to industry.

CDRC thinks when industrial environment is not perfect and industry chain is not mature, the key points to grasp for the preview of the documentary industrialization are as follows: at the industrial operation level, intensivism is a path; at the industrial endogenetic level, system is the key point; and at the industrial layout level, pluralism is a trend.
